Trainwreck is probably the best description I've heard of it. I think even Nene's focus episode was a little more effective at delving into her personality, though as much as it pains me to admit I think I like Nene's 2040 redesign more as a character design.Ĭrash. Even with the few spotlight elements she gets (Born to Kill, Double Vision) she doesn't get much of the character development that, say, Priss and Sylia get. There are elements to it that I do like over the original OAVs, particularly Linna. While not the original, it manages to stand on a lot of its own merits. You've pretty much summed up my own thoughts on BGC 2040. Supposedly, it was a continuation of the original OVAs, but it shunts prior characterization as having never happened and is generally poorly paced and extremely short.Īs to the AD Police anime, I'm not entirely sure if that's canon to the main BGC series, but I know it was spun off of it. Then there's Bubblegum Crash, whose name is rather fitting, because it's something of a trainwreck.

It's also on record as one of the few series that outright made me wince at what it inflicted on one of the protagonists near the end. My only major complaint is that the boomers are much more John Carpenter's The Thing in design, and less military hardware like the original's. For those of you who remember the arguments regarding Sylvie and Priss, well, there's fodder for that as well. I prefer the original Sylia over 2040's take, but she's still interesting. Linna, in particular, becomes less of a cypher of a character and gets a lot more characterization. It has good humor, good crisp animation, and excellent fight scenes.
#BUBBLEGUM CRISIS MECHA FULL#
THere's no huge climax and denoument.īGC 2040, by contrast, is a full TV series, and thus has a much more interconnected plot that surfaces as time goes on. However, beyond occasional two episode connected arcs, BGC is very much more a standalone episodes kind of OVA, with minimal connection between the various adventures except for a couple small plot threads. Its followup in Red Eyes introduces one of my favorite anime villians as well. In particular, Midnight Rambler is one that most cyberpunk fans should see. There are some characters that I prefer one incarnation of over another, but overall, both series have a definite level of quality.Īnyway, the general division seems to be as follows: if you want a deeper focus on the cyberpunk genre and a more gritty look at the mechanical design and animation, as well as superior music, watch the original. More than Gundam, by a wide measure.Īnyway, I'm of the opinion that both BGC original and BGC:2040 have their own unique qualities, and both are definitely worth watching.
